UPDATE: Per VDOT notification, the DETOUR will begin on June 11, 2026.
ROUTE 11 AND WEST MONROE ST. PAVEMENT MARKING AND SIGNING PLAN
West Monroe Street Realignment Traffic Patterns
The VDOT design for traffic upon completion of the West Monroe Street Realignment will benefit all drivers by reducing conflict points and controlling transitions and turns in more direct way.
- The north leg of West Monroe Street will be realigned to match the alignment of the south leg.
- By aligning the north leg, the distance is increased between the signalized intersection at West Main Street and the West Monroe Street intersection. This allows for additional storage at the signal and safer operations during heavy traffic events, such as a detour from I-81 onto surface streets.
- The matched alignment will offer a clear path across West Lee Highway and reduce the chance of head-on collisions between vehicles crossing West Lee Highway.
- The stopping positions for vehicles traveling in either direction on Monroe Street will allow drivers to intersect the road at right angles. This will improve sight lines and visibility for drivers making the through movement across West Lee Highway. The existing miss-alignment forces drivers to turn their vehicles at an angle that makes it difficult to see vehicles approaching from the driver’s left side.
- A Raised Median will be installed along West Lee Highway to prevent left turns in or out of the driveway entrance at the Food City parking lot. Drivers wanting to enter or exit the parking lot will either need to make a right turn only, or they will need to use either of the driveway entrances on Monroe Street or Main Street. The new dedicated left turn lanes will make it easier to use those entrances. Elimination of those left turn movements will eliminate multiple points where crashes can occur.
- (E) Dedicated left turn lanes from West Lee Highway on to Monroe Street will be added in both directions. This will greatly reduce the chances of rearend collisions as vehicles make left turns.
